Henry Mark RICHMOND – Seaman F.S.D. of “Outer Gabbard” light vessel (LV50) 1911

Henry Mark was born Q3 1861 in Tendring district of Harwich, the 4th child of Mark (1834- 1899) and Eliza GREEN (1832 -1889) who married in 1853. Father Mark was a mariner, listed as master of vessel “Alde” in 1891.

At 19 Henry was a wharf labourer in Harwich (1881 census).

On the 1891 Census only Henry and his younger sister Eliza are “at home” , presumable father at sea and other siblings left home. (Mother died 1889). Henry was by this time a waterman working on a barge.

Henry married Elizabeth Mary HALLUMS (1865-1932) in Harwich 22 Apr 1894. Her father was captain of a barge.

By 1901 he was in Trinity House service – crew on board light vessel “Newarp” as fog signal driver on census night. (same vessel in 1901 as Charles Thomas THORNE, fellow crew of 1911 “Outer Gabbard”).

His wife and 3 children were at 7 Albert Street, Harwich, along with her widowed father and unmarried brother.

1911 Census when Henry was fog signal driver on “Outer Gabbard” wife and 3 children, aged 16, 14 and 13, at Coke Street, Harwich. Elizabeth died a few months later (Q2 1911).

1923 – son’s marriage record gives Henry (aged 62) as “retired mercantile mariner”.

Electoral registers for 1923 – 1928 17 Coke Street, Harwich with son William Mark (and presumably his wife Martha) 1929-1931 list Henry Mark at 1 Gun Cottages, Harwich, along with Charles & Maud JENNINGS – Maud being sister of his daughter in law Martha.

Henry died aged 72, 11 Feb 1933, probate granted 31 March, beneficiary his youngest child.

1919 & 1920 Electoral registers only have him at 17 Coke Street (with his brother 1920) . 1939 Register lists Cyril Henry RICHMOND b. 24 Jul 1895 at 127 Virginia Road, Stepney, general labourer. States married, but no marriage found. Death Q4 1972 Stepney.

Beatrice Irene b. Q1 1897
married Walter Christopher NAISBITT in Q4 1922, a marine engineer b. 1891 and lived in Seaton Carew, Co. Durham until her death in 1970. Walter died 1932 and she re-married 1941 Emmanuel LONGVILLE.

I child – She married and they had 2 daughters.

1920 – 1929 Electoral register gives his address as 17 Coke Street, Harwich. With brother in 1920, then with father from 1923 to 1929. He was a general labourer working on the docks and lived 2 Albert Street, Harwich in 1939 with Martha and 1 child . William died Q1 1963, reg. Colchester.
